Taking long-distance trains in Japan
The railway network in Japan is extensive and accurate. You are likely to use trains when travelling beyond Tokyo.
Trains are indispensable to residents in Japan. In 2003, 24 million people per day used trains (Japan Rail only), which is about a fifth of the population, and more than usage across EU (18 million per day, 2002).
Because they are so vital to daily life in Japan, train companies have perfected the schedule and the trains run extremely accurately. The average delay per train is less than one minute.
Japan Rail, the largest train company, offers "Japan Rail Pass" for international travellers. This pass allows you to travel on any lines operated by JR a cost lower than a return trip between Tokyo and Kyoto. You should consider getting one if you expect to travel beyond Tokyo.
