Kii Mountain has been considered a sacred place where Gods reside since pre-history. Not only Shinto priests, but also Buddhist monks visited the mountain to train themselves. The pilgrimage paths has been built to get to the mountains in the area and Kii Mountain area served as the centre of religious interactions among different beliefs in Japan.

The Kii Mountain Range is located to the south of Kyoto and Nara, ancient capital cities that ruled Japan for over 1300 years. The mountains occupy most of the area known as the Kii Peninsula, a landmass that juts outwards into the Pacific Ocean.
